Let me show you some of the more unusual areas that have been targets for id theft.
Do you remember the film with Leonardo DiCaprio called "Catch Me If You Can? These next cases of identity theft remind me of this film.
This guy, Frank Abagnale, impersonated a doctor, assistant D.A., professor of history and most unbelievably an airline pilot...now how do you pull off something like that? How do you Pretend to be a pilot.
I'm glad I wasn't on any flight he was the pilot of.
He scored millions of dollars worth of checks that were bad. He was finally caught and convicted. After serving his time, he now fights the type of crime that made him famous...how ironic.
Some of the scams people ran seemed so far-fetched that you wondered how they could pull them off, but they did.
Here are a few that I know of that I thought you would be interested in.
Have you ever heard of someone stealing their own identity?
This actually happened! A young man was a graduate of a PA university, and feeling overwhelmed from a crushing amount of credit card debt, decided to make his own death seem real, and completed this scam with his own obituary in the local town paper.
Not quite a year later he decided to "come back to life" by getting a new driver's license with the sole intent of eventually opening new credit cards. Wow! Give this man an A for effort!
Unfortunately for him the DMV wasn't so thrilled with giving a license to a "dead" person and called the cops.
He was arrested for stealing his own identity!
Stealing from the deceased has become a big problem. Go to deceased people and identity theft to learn how this problem can affect you.
Many years ago a friend of mine, I'll call her Mary, was victimized by a huge identity theft ring right in her own neighborhood.
Unfortunately, many of her friends and neighbor's also ended getting "stung" by this scam operation.
I remember her telling me about this on a "soap opera" type basis. I was living in another state at the time and would get weekly updates.
A new couple moved into Mary's neighborhood and quickly became liked by this close knit community, and also worked their way into the homes of neighbors.
This couple ended up stealing purses and wallets out of cars, stealing mail and hacking the internet connections of the neighbors that were not secure.
In doing this, the couple made use of the personal information stolen from dozens of these people's identity.
Sadly, this is not unknown in the world of identity theft. Nearly 14% of identity theft victims have their identity stolen from a person they knew.
This particular type of identity theft is unbelievable and reminds me about the movie "Catch Me If You Can" I mentioned earlier.
This man was totally determined to be a doctor and would go to any lengths to practice medicine.
Only problem being, he didn't want to go to medical school to accomplish his goal.
The scary part being, he stole Real doctors' identities and made his reputation from these other MD's life work.
The craziest part of this scam is the fact that he was caught, convicted, (in fact several times) and whenever he was set free he would do it all over again.
Having made a good reputation on working in community clinic's and volunteer missions he would actually be running a scam of identity theft on all his victims through involuntary manslaughter, mail fraud and grand theft to name a few.
This "doctor" with all his credentials, was so believable and trusted by his staff and patients that he was able to pull off this major sham right under their noses.
Be sure and check out cyber identity theft, as this particular crime has thieves that are becoming more and more creative in the way they steal your identity.
As you can see, there are many different types of identity theft to be aware of. It does pay to arm yourself with knowledgeable to keep yourself from becoming the next victim of identity theft. Knowledge is power!
